The Reserve Bank hosted an in-person CEO Financial Education Round Table meetings on 21 March and 23 March 2023. The Roundtable meetings marked the official launch of the 2023 Global Money Week celebrations in Zimbabwe. A total of 80 Chief Executive Officers and their representatives attended the meetings. Throughout the whole month of March 2023, a total of 9299 students and 350 teachers and lectures from primary and secondary schools and tertiary institutions were reached out during the provincial financial literacy awareness campaigns where financial institutions held exhibitions of their financial products and services. Topics covered during the GMW campaign included: setting a budget, investing, monitoring expenses, saving, income generating projects, entrepreneurship, benefits of insurance products for young people and participation in capital markets. Further, tertiary students had the opportunity to participate in an online quiz competition where the winner was awarded a first prize of a laptop and runner-up received a mobile phone.

Throughout Global Money Week 2022, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe along with other 19 financial sector players reached 3,664,853 children and youth through both digital and physical communication channels. Some activities undertaken were as follows:

  • The Reserve Bank hosted an inaugural virtual CEO Financial Education Round Table on 22 March 2022 to mark the commencement of the GMW celebrations;
  • Representatives from financial institutions visited 79 schools throughout the country, including rural areas and shared information on various financial topics;
  • One of the banks invited school students to visit their branch to have first-hand experience of banking operations;
  • Institutions facilitated online competition for both primary and secondary school students;
  • Institutions shared financial literacy information through the media, radio as well as social media platforms;
  • The CEO Financial Education Symposium and seminars were also conducted;
  • A Global Money Week Symposium and seminars were also conducted;
  • Some microfinance institutions provided free training services to entrepreneurs;
  • The Reserve Bank developed GMW content, which was crafted into jingles and broadcasted on four radio stations in English and four other local languages.

Throughout Global Money Week 2022, the Insurance and Pensions Commission together with the following regulated entities, Old Mutual, ZB Life Assurance, Minerva Risk Advisors, CBZ Insurance and Coronation Risk Advisors collectively reached more than 200,000 children and youth through in-person, digital media and virtual platforms.

Some activities included:

  • Online video competitions for primary school, high school and tertiary students;
  • Educational videos by the Commissioner, directors (Insurance, Pensions and Actuarial) on matters relating to the industry;
  • Joint financial literacy seminars with fellow financial sector regulators – Securities and Exchange Commission of Zimbabwe and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe at the University of Zimbabwe, Harare Institute of Technology and Dominican Convent School;
  • Radio shows on financial literacy, which targeted the youth;
  • Leveraged digital and social media to engage with youth and parents on how they can be #SmartAboutMoney;
  • Short thesis competition for university students;
  • Gaming and puzzles on insurance for young learners, administered online;
  • 5-minute insurance commercials on two radio stations per week;
  • Advertisements placed online and on Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation channels;
  • Visits to insurance and financial Institutions;
  • Promoting Savings Card for youth;
  • Live social media posts from schools;
  • Running Old Mutual’s On The Money Radio slot with financial influencers followed by a quiz;
  • Run On The Money Financial Literacy Sessions at the Innovation Hub with entrepreneurs.

Throughout Global Money Week 2021, the Insurance and Pensions Commission along with partners such as Old Mutual Group, Zimnat Group and Cell Insurance reached about 200,000 children and youth through several digital activities. These included a video competition on Facebook, YouTube kids and Young People’s talk show. Short educational “Piggy Bank” targeted students at primary schools, and “On The Money” initiative focused on young people.

Numerous GMW2021 financial literacy awareness sessions were offered for children, youth and for adults, mostly through digital and radio platforms. These included kids showcasing what a better life means to them through a story, audio or art. Different partnerships with radio stations were formed to promote child education and youth empowerment programmes. Moreover, radio campaigns focused on money, insurance and influencer marketing. During GMW2021, students who won competitions received prizes ranging from new laptops to tablets.

Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe
For Global Money Week 2019, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe invited children from over 230 schools to visit different bank branches, to have a first-hand experience of banking operations. Additionally, representatives from the Bank visited schools and special needs institutions to explain different financial matters. During the Week, the Bank organised different competitions for both secondary and tertiary school students, such as debates, essay competitions, and quizzes. Furthermore, workshops and seminars were organised for young entrepreneurs. Throughout the Week, financial literacy information was shared via mass media, as well as social media platforms. Finally, newspapers published articles highlighted the different Global Money Week celebrations organised in the country.

Cultiv8 Africa
In the spirit of not leaving any child behind, Cultiv8 Africa reached out to children and youth living with disabilities, to enhance their financial literacy skills. With the support of its partners, the organisation conducted a seminar to bring children with disabilities and Financial Service Providers (FSP’s) together, to create a platform for the youth to gain access to financial education. The discussions highlighted a major gap within the FSP sector in relation to the inclusion of youth living with disabilities, and the provision of services and products that are disability friendly. The realization of Agenda 2030 and Agenda 2063 will allow the inclusion of the youth with disabilities. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe was a Guest of Honor, informing the youth about the services currently available to them, as well as explaining the National Financial Inclusion Strategy.

Abantu Development Initiative Trust
Throughout GMW2019, Abantu Development Initiative Trust (ADIT) along with their partners reached 124 children and youth through its various activities. The organisation held a drawing and art design competition for creating piggy banks by recycling empty containers and boxes with the aim of promoting savings in young children. At the end of the week prizes were given to the four most creative piggy banks. During GMW 2019, financial literacy awareness sessions were offered for children, teaching them how to save and why it is important. These events help the young generations to learn more about saving and entrepreneurship.

Global Foundation of Public Speaking
For GMW2019, The Global Foundation of Public speaking hosted 4 conferences and organised a fair. It was attended by more than 200 young entrepreneurs and over 50 students participated. The vision of Global Money Week was reinforced through various activities and events. The activities and events were planned with the need to engage and understand Zimbabwe’s monetary policy in the view of Transitional Stabilization Programme. The focus was to make young entrepreneurs understand how to align their businesses with national strategies and policies. There were panel discussions and various speakers talking about the importance and urgent need for financial literacy and knowledge of formal financial systems. Throughout the Week, various events brought together people from different fields from the influential civil society, leaders from the public and private sectors. It was a great initiative for everyone sharing their investment, growth and financial management strategies in the prevailing economic environment. The events organised included the Millennials Business Breakfast, the Founders Mastermind Luncheon, the Bakhokheli National Business Executives Dinner, the Pioneer Fund and a fair - Nyuku fair during the Week.

Zimbabwe Stock Exchange
The Zimbabwe Stock Exchange reached 67 children and youth through their visits to the stock exchange for the GMW2019. During the Week, the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange organised financial literacy awareness sessions for children, youth and adults. These sessions covered how to invest at the ZSE. Additionally, the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange ran campaigns on its social media platforms regarding financial literacy during the GMW, engaging both adults and youth

Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe hosted students from multiple high schools to explain the functions and operations of the Central Bank. The Bank also participated in activities organised by other stakeholders, including officiating at the High School Global Money Week debate tournament, the Inter-University Debate Competition, as well as presenting at a youth financial inclusion workshop. Because of the urging by the Bank, a number of organisations, including banking institutions, microfinance institutions, financial sector regulatory authorities, and private organisations also participated in the Global Money Week celebrations. Some of these activities include visits to schools to discuss financial topics such as savings, credit, and investments, debates and quizzes, and the sharing of financial literacy information through mass media and social media platforms. Students were also invited to visit some organisations to learn more about banking operations.

Stanbic Bank Zimbabwe
Stanbic Bank GMW2018 celebrations reached over 41,000 people through its various social media platforms. The Bank hosted an essay competition with the theme “Money Matters Matter”. The first placed essay was titled “Money - Oxygen of Human Kind”. Additionally, students at Goldridge College participated in a financial literacy and savings awareness programme, delivered by the Kwekwe branch manager. The Bank’s website was transformed into an information hub for GMW related information. The staff members at Stanbic Bank were also involved, writing opinion articles on financial literacy and how it impacts young people.

Junior Achievement Zimbabwe
JA Zimbabwe organised multiple events for GMW2018, including many visits to different banks for children and young people. At the banks, children had the opportunity to tour the bank, during which they learnt about different departments and services, and how to make the most of all the facilities. The participants also had the opportunity to attend sessions on savings, spending, and budgeting. Students had an opportunity to visit the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange, which taught them about investments and stocks. In addition, children learnt how to buy and sell shares, how companies qualify to be listed, and how to earn profits through trading. JAZ, together with its partners, organised financial literacy workshops in schools. The workshops covered saving, budgeting, spending, 4 P’s (i.e. pocket, priority, price and planet), and investments. The emphasis was placed on promoting financial education and good financial habits. Some students had the opportunity to visit the Barclays Bank Exhibition at the Art Gallery, giving an insight in the history of the Bank. Following the tour, Barclays’ staff members spoke to the students on topics such as financial literacy and the value of the bank in Zimbabwe. During the talk, students learnt about why money came to existence and the importance of money.

Global Foundation of Public Speaking
Celebrations were organised by the Global Foundation of Public Speaking and the Yananiso Trust’s financial literacy project, Fortune Foundation. Five schools attended the Quiz Tournament, sponsored by Speak Training Consultants. The participants were split into three groups depending on their age. Contestants were quizzed on 12 categories, including Financial Literacy. In addition, the Foundation, in collaboration with CABS Bank, hosted a Global Money Week Debate Tournament. Ten schools sent three teams each to attend the tournament. The themes of the tournament were based on GMW topics such as saving, budgeting, and investing. Finally, the Fortune Foundation announced the winners of its essay-writing competition, sponsored by Lion Microfinance. The competition was open to all students across the country.

Cultiv8 Africa
During Global Money Week 2018, Cultiv8 Africa organised a Financial Literacy Seminar in Harare. The seminar included presentations on topics such as “Financial Literacy as a Skill”, “Saving Your Way to Success” and “Cryptocurrency in the 21st Century”. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe was the Guest of Honor and shed light on its National Financial Inclusion Strategy.

During GMW 2017 in Zimbabwe, amazing celebrations were organised and led by the People’s Own Savings Bank (POSB) and Junior Achievement (JA) Zimbabwe, in partnership with the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, the Ministry of Education and the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange, giving children and youth the opportunity to attend financial education lectures at 105 schools in Zimbabwe. On 28 March, the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange was festively opened by students from three schools. In addition, People’s Own Savings Bank hosted groups of students at their various branches for educational sessions to explain the day-to-day operations of a financial institution. The students had the unique opportunity to go around to each of the bank’s work stations and met with the Senior Branch Manager for a final presentation and discussion. Furthermore, during GMW 2017, students from 10 universities attended a debate competition live on radio under the theme Learn.Earn.Save. Additionally, via Facebook and Twitter posts, POSB and JA Zimbabwe provided financial advice to the Zimbabwean youth, and organised online competitions to raise awareness on the GMW 2017 theme.


2016 Zimbabwe Global Money Week

The People’s Own Savings Bank (POSB) Zimbabwe partnered with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, the Ministry of Youth, Indigenization and Empowerment and other organisations to celebrate Global Money Week 2016 in Zimbabwe. Nationwide, ten different activities were held by POSB and its collaborating institutions. Students in all provinces of the country were given the opportunity to participate in an essay competition on the subject of saving and winners of the competition received various prizes. Two finalists from each province were given $50 seed money to open a Juniorsave account with POSB. This year, all POSB branches across Zimbabwe opened their doors to schools in their communities, for students to visit POSB banking halls and observe the day-to-day operations of the bank. A total of 96 schools visited POSB branches across the country during the week. The Bank’s branch officials also visited two schools in low income and rural areas to give financial education lessons to students. POSB Zimbabwe also launched a youth credit scheme in partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Indigenization and Economic Empowerment.

Junior Achievement Zimbabwe, in partnership with MBCA Bank and POSB, organised financial education workshops in the cities of Harare, Mutare, Bulawaya and Kwekwe. More than 9000 students attended these workshops, which were aimed at raising awareness about financial literacy issues – including financial ethics, money, saving, budgeting and spending. Participating students were given the opportunity to open savings accounts and give practical lessons on how to operate an ATM. Other activities held in Zimbabwe to commemorate the week included football and netball tournaments, and a bazaar to promote indigenous business.


2015 Zimbabwe Global Money Week

Zimbabwe joined the world in celebrating the Global Money Week in 2015. The Minister for Primary and Secondary Education officially launched the Global Money Week celebrations at a ceremony organised by the People Own Savings Bank (POSB). 120 students from serveral local high schools attended the launch and spent the day at the POSB. The students underwent a financial literacy programme focusing on the significance of saving and how to develop a business proposal. In groups of 10, the students were tasked to simulate business proposals. The top 3 winning groups won funded Youth Accounts. The students were also given a presentation on career choices in the banking sector. People Own Savings Bank launched a youth friendly banking product called the Youth Account on 9 March.

The Governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe played host to youngsters from ZwTEENS. The Governor stressed on the need for young people to be proactive and push for the implementation of policies that focused on their socio-economic empowerment. He noted that there was a need for banks to have low cost banking products and services to ensure financial inclusion of children and youth. The Zimbabwe Stock Exchange opened its offices to students from Hilbright Science College and held a ceremonial bell ringing event to commence trading. The students had first hand exposure to trading on the trading floor. The Product Development Manager of Zimbabwe Stock Exchange gave a presentation on the history of the capital market and how they operate. He also talked about the investment opportunities that are available for the youth and answered questions from the students.

Junior Achievement (JA) Zimbabwe and ZwTeens organised school trips to the MBCA Bank to learn more about banking and savings. The trip also provided an opportunity for the student to receive career counseling and assistance on how to write CVs, prepare for job interviews and professional etiquette. In total, 7 schools attended the bank visit.


2014 Zimbabwe Global Money Week

Zimbabwe hosted a number of activities in various provinces supported by Plan Zimbabwe, Camfed, The Merchant Bank of Central Africa (MBCA), Barclays Bank and other financial institutions. Junior Achievement Zimbabwe celebrated Global Money Week at their 4 branches: Mutare, Kwekwe, Bulawayo and Harare. The JA office in Mutare collaborated with Plan Zimbabwe and The Merchant Bank of Central Africa (MBCA- a subsidiary of Nedbank) to host bank visits. The event was to help demystify the notion that banking is the preserve for adults only and that banks are not accessible to young people. After the bank visit the children met in the Plan Zimbabwe boardroom for the Skype call which was successful and interesting. The children managed to communicate with their counterparts from Ethiopia, Philippines and Afghanistan. Young people learnt how to communicate the value of savings and budgeting. In the Midlands Province (Kwekwe), there was a joint activity with Barclays Bank, Amalgamated Motor Corporation motive and 6 high schools in Kwekwe. The students had a special day named 'Make a Difference Day' where they visited the bank to discuss topics regarding what inspired them to get into the small businesses the students were running, and what challenges were they facing in their businesses now. There were also exhibitions from the different companies in the schools and speeches were made during the event.

The Seed Money Programme celebrated Global Money Week by boosting awareness of their programme within the young Zimbabwean female entrepreneurial network by increasing their profile they have in directly improving the youth's basic knowledge of financial literacy.
