As the national coordinator, the National Bank of Slovakia invited all schools, financial education partners and media partners to participate in the event. A record 205 partners took up the opportunity to prepare their own activities for GMW, including nine kindergartens, 109 primary schools, 52 secondary schools, 3 universities, and 32 organisations from the financial, media and not-for-profit sectors. More than 25,000 children and young people and over 6,100 adults participated directly in GMW educational activities. Schools organised special activities targeted at children from marginalised groups, focusing on practical issues that they have to handle within their families.

Thanks to the NBS’s strong online campaign, support from media partners (in particular the RTVS public radio and television broadcaster, but also regional television stations and magazines), and other partners’ social media postings, more than 5.2 million online views were recorded and around 950,000 people were reached indirectly. Financial sector partners used their databases to inform their customers about GMW and provide practical advice on money protection. Throughout the week, listeners of Slovak Radio were able to improve their money-related knowledge through interviews with experts on a number of topics.

The NBS itself organised a variety of activities for the whole GMW. Trainers in four education canters welcomed a total of 465 pupils, guiding them through 16 experiential training sessions on the topics of income and work, money, financial planning, and budgeting. Trainers also visited schools directly. In addition, NBS presented two new educational tools for first and second grade primary schoolchildren. For NBS education partners, NBS prepared a discussion workshop that, among other things, allowed people from different organisations to explore new connections and exchange experiences. On Friday 22 March, during GMW, the NBS hosted at its headquarters the final of Slovakia’s national competition under the ECB’s Generation €uro Students’ Award. A total of 2189 students took part in the competition.

A new element in the 2023 GMW was an NBS-organised competition for the best GMW activity for primary and secondary schools. Altogether 135 schools took part in the competition, and for the 20 that earned the highest scores from its evaluators, the NBS awarded prizes worth a total of €3,000.

Other GMW activities that took place in Slovakia include daily broadcasts on Slovak Radio, quizzes and competitions for the public, quiz on online security (Cyber Security Competence and Certification Centre and www.brainee.sk), ako sa vyznáte v poistení (How well do you know insurance) (Slovak Insurance Association), preventing digital payment fraud competition (by Payment Card Association), reč peňazí  (Money Talk) - online course in the form of a quiz (by Nadácia NN ľuďom foundation and NBS) and many more.

DATE OF THE EVENT:

  • 10th – 17th of March

NUMBER OF CHILDREN REACHED:

  • 2 869

Various activities were organised by Children of Slovakia Foundation which were attended by the members of their social and financial literacy development programs.

For Global Money Week the Foundation brought together 3 non-governmental organisations, 42 schools (ranging from kindergarten to high school) from all regions of Slovakia, altogether about 2,900 children and young people. Lecturers from both programs voluntarily prepared special activities for both children and youth such as finance-themed workshops with their families, teachers or lecturers.

Activities based on experimental education gave children a chance to manage and use money. For example in one activity, participants prepared their own budget and savings plan together with bank employees. They also learnt bargaining and commercial skills. The students then put their newly learnt skills into practice by baking and selling cookies. Participants also organised a financial collection for the animal shelter in the neighbourhood; a charity concert for their ill classmate and a financial collection for their classmate in material need. They discovered how important it is to help each other while gaining new organisational and economic skills from managing the events.

A workshop for elementary-school and secondary-school pupils called “Let’s look for fundraising possibilities in our town” showed children and youth how to create fundraising opportunities in their community. The students came up with an idea at the end of the work shop called “Let´s turn the waste in our village into a profit”. They prepared concrete proposal and organised a meeting with the mayor to discuss their proposal. The Mayor promised to use their proposal to fuel further discussions with other elected members of the village council.

Primary school children were taught about the euro and how to use modern payment methods. Others were taught “economical cooking and baking” where they worked out a budget, went grocery shopping and baked a cake to serve to their parents and grandparents after school. They then compared the costs for baking as opposed to buying a cake. The money they saved the school put into their year-end party’s class fund.

A workshop for children from Children´s Home of K. Hofbauer in Podolínec, Slovakia, taught children how to start a business and establish a trade. They had the chance to discuss their ideas with the invited guest –a budding fast food entrepreneur. The entrepreneur was a long-term unemployed person who started his own successful business. The children loved listening to his story and learning practical steps that they can use to start their own business, i.e. the procedure and conditions for a trade certificate; how to apply for a business allowance; and the legislative obligations of a business owner.

Secondary schools, primary schools and a seniors club in Martin, Slovakia hosted an acitivity called “Let’s talk together,” where the pariticpants were taught the importance of money in a changing economic system and how to ensure a stable financial future for youth. The generationally diverse group also discussed the importance of money and savings.

A special one-day programme for mothers living in the Crisis Centre of St.Elisabeth, Banská Bystrica, Slovakia with their children involved inspirational social-financial education activities. They discussed their financial possibilities and the process of finding a job. Beside the discussion we prepared a meal together with an agreed upon budget. Later they played games and took a financial quiz.

Various topics were discussed with young families in community centes. Topics discussed were how to use money in a responsible way, life insuranve, family budgeting, personbal budgeting, money and its various forms, how to calculate wages and how to save.
