In Portugal, the GMW is coordinated by the Banco de Portugal, ASF – Portuguese Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority and CMVM – Portuguese Securities Market Commission, under the National Plan for Financial Education (NPFE). The 2024 edition engaged 346 schools, 16 entities and around 33 000 people directly.

This year the NPFE developed a website specifically dedicated to promoting the participation and engagement of entities and schools in the GMW 2024. A diversified set of free educational materials and examples of activities were disseminated through this website, to support teachers and other trainers in carrying out initiatives within the scope of this international campaign. Through the website, activities were announced to the schools and entities that joined this year’s edition of the GMW. Among the most exciting activities organised for GMW, the following are worth mentioning:

  • The financial supervisors launched social media campaigns on Facebook and Instagram dedicated to the GMW 2024.
  • Banco de Portugal, supported by its regional network, held several initiatives in 32 schools throughout the country engaging about 1,900 students from pre-school age to secondary education, and entities such as Câmara Municipal de Reguengos and Estabelecimento Prisional de Lamego. Moreover, Banco de Portugal together with the CFA Society Portugal launched a financial literacy competition for university students titled “O meu futuro financeiro” (“My financial future”).
  • ASF developed a one-week activity called “5 days, 5 challenges” in which 155 students had the opportunity to reflect on digital fraud and savings. Additionally, ASF held a session at Escola Secundária de Sampaio to discuss the results of the activity.
  • ASF launched a social media campaign in various multimedia formats based on the theme of the GMW 2024 edition. The target audience for this campaign, focusing on fraud and savings products, was youth. It reached approximately 133,000 people.
  • CMVM launched a three-week initiative involving 110 students from Escola Secundária Francisco de Holanda, which include three activities. In class, the students discussed the financial topics of investment return, risk, and suitability, and answered a questionnaire to assess their financial knowledge and investor profile. In addition, CMVM held a class on the topic of capital markets, in which participated ASF, Euronext Lisbon and the CFA Society Portugal. The students discussed the results of the work conducted in class and rang the bell at the Portuguese Stock Exchange.
  • CMVM launched a social media campaign to raise awareness on investment advertising and basic investment principles reaching 10,841 people indirectly.
  • APB promoted the European Money Quiz, an initiative that aims to assess young people's financial literacy, engaging around 3,000 students from 49 schools.
  • ASFAC held a class on planning and budget management, providing students with tools to make responsible financial decisions, reaching around 90 students.
  • CPR-CACR carried out a financial literacy workshop targeted to young refugees in Portugal, engaging 10 refugees.
  • DECO held online classes to discuss the importance of making informed financial decisions, reaching about 600 students from 35 schools.
  • FACM carried out the "No Poupar Está o Ganho" and the “Por Tua Conta” projects, in which students participate in quiz competitions about financial literacy topics. The Foundation also implemented the financial education programme "Eu e a Minha Reforma", specifically designed for adults. In total, these initiatives reached about 18,000 students.
  • IPDJ carried out several activities through its partners of the Programa Escolhas. In total, the 118 partners reached about 700 students.
  • JAP promoted a session to enhance knowledge on savings and the risks associated with financial management, engaging 50 students.
  • RBE disseminated the GMW 2024 through its communication channels in order to raise awareness about the event among school communities.
  • Câmara Municipal de Oliveira de Azeméis held a class on planning and budget management, engaging 300 students.

Additionally, about 346 schools and 30,767 students across the country carried out a myriad of activities, including financial literacy competitions, debates based on the “Todos Contam Lesson Plans” and games.

In Portugal, the GMW is coordinated by the Banco de Portugal, ASF and CMVM, under the National Plan for Financial Education (NPFE). The 2023 edition engaged 342 schools, 11 NPFE’s stakeholders and around 160951 people. During GMW 2023, representative of BdP shared the Portuguese step-by-step approach to promote financial literacy in schools, which has been implemented since 2011 by the financial supervisors in partnership with the Ministry of Education, on the High-Level Debate on Financial Education of Children that took place in the European Parliament on March 22. This year the NPFE developed a new website, specifically dedicated to promoting the participation and engagement of entities and schools in GMW 2023. A diversified set of free educational materials and examples of activities were disseminated through this website, to support teachers and other trainers in carrying out initiatives within the scope of this international campaign.

Through the website, the schools, institutions and NGOs that joined GMW 2023 were announced. The Associação de Instituições de Crédito Especializado organised a workshop exploring with 30 students the concepts of needs, wishes, budgeting, and savings. The Autoridade de Supervisão de Seguros e Fundos de Pensões launched a social media campaign to explain on sustainable finance. A quiz was also held in Instagram stories to test the followers' knowledge on this subject.The Associação Portuguesa de Bancos promoted the European Money Quiz, an initiative that aims to assess young people's financial literacy, engaging around 100 students from 41 schools. The Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira developed the activity “É hora de semear o futuro” (“It’s time to plant the future”) during its participation in Futurália, an education and employment fair for young people. Throughout this session, 300 students were challenged to participate in a quiz on planning and budget management, circular economy and sustainability, and taxation. The Associação Portuguesa para a Defesa do Consumidor held online classes to discuss the importance of saving for a rainy day and investing wisely, reaching about 600 students from more than 40 schools. The Banco de Portugal, supported by its regional branches, held several initiatives in 24 schools throughout the country engaging 2150 students from pre-school age to secondary education. The Comissão do Mercado de Valores Mobiliários and Euronext Lisbon organised a class on the topic of capital markets, reaching directly about 70 students from 2 schools. The students also visited the Portuguese Stock Exchange and rang the bell. The CMVM also launched a social media campaign to raise awareness on investment risks and best practices, and to draw attention on the topic of crypto assets, reaching indirectly 10006 people. The Direção-Geral do Livro, dos Arquivos e das Bibliotecas disseminated the GMW 2023 among public libraries. The Fundação Dr. António Cupertino de Miranda involved 16300 students and 196 schools, enrolled in the "No Poupar Está o Ganho" and in the “Por Tua Conta” project. The Foundation also implemented the financial education programme "Eu e a Minha Reforma", specifically designed for adults. The Junior Achievement Portugal promoted a session to enhance knowledge on planning and budget management, engaging 25 students. The Ordem dos Psicólogos Portugueses launched a social media campaign called "Click once and save for life", raising awareness about the importance of savings. The Rede de Bibliotecas Escolares and the Direção-Geral da Educação launched a campaign through its communication channels, to raise awareness about the GMW 2023 among the school community. Additionally, more than 340 schools and 25250 students across the country carried out a myriad of activities, including financial literacy competitions, debates based on the “Todos Contam Lesson Plans” and games.

In Portugal, GMW is coordinated by the Banco de Portugal, ASF and CMVM, under the National Plan for Financial Education (NPFE). The 2022 edition engaged 271 schools, 2 universities, 9 NPFE’s stakeholders, 14 financial supervisory authorities of the Portuguese-speaking countries and around 122,000 people.

On March 22, the Portuguese financial supervisors hosted a webinar with the financial supervisory authorities of the other Portuguese-speaking countries to discuss the importance of awareness raising campaigns for young people. More than 100 representatives from the authorities of Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal and Sao Tome and Principe joined this webinar and shared their experiences in conducting financial awareness raising campaigns, as well as in implementing and coordinating GMW nationally. The webinar also benefited from the participation of the OECD/INFE Executive Secretary.

The Portuguese financial supervisors also launched a campaign on the NPFE’s Facebook page to raise awareness on the importance of building up savings for a rainy day and adopting adequate behaviours to prevent digital frauds. The campaign drew attention on trending topics such as crypto assets and sustainable finance.

The Alto Comissariado para as Migrações (ACM) conducted financial education sessions based on the “Todos Contam Lesson Plans”, which were developed by the financial supervisors, and targeted 600 young people who are out of school and face socio-economic vulnerabilities.

The Associação Portuguesa de Bancos promoted the European Money Quiz, an initiative that aims to assess young people's financial literacy, engaging around 2,500 students from 46 schools.

The Associação de Instituições de Crédito Especializado organised the national competition called "Economia para o Sucesso", an initiative which aims to empower young people in their relationship with money. It engaged 23 students.

The Associação Portuguesa para a Defesa do Consumidor held online classes to discuss the importance of savings and online safety with digital financial platforms. These sessions reached about 800 students from more than 20 schools.

The ASF developed the activity “Poupar com Pinta” (“Having fun while saving”), targeted children up to 9 years old and allowed them to colour their own piggy bank. For older students, ASF developed online questionnaires to address saving habits and digital security. Both activities were developed in collaboration with their parents. ASF also launched a campaign on Facebook to share the results.

The Banco de Portugal, supported by its regional branches, held several initiatives in 16 schools throughout the country engaging 2,000 students from primary to secondary schools.

The CMVM launched a video on Twitter and Linkedln to raise awareness about the risks of crypto assets, focused on ESA’s messages: the prices of these assets can drop and increase rapidly in short periods; the investor can lose all money invested; the promises of quick and risk-free gains may be associated with fraud; there are no investor protection mechanisms.

The Fundação Dr. António Cupertino de Miranda involved 13,800 students and 120 schools enrolled in the "No Poupar Está o Ganho" project. The Foundation implemented a financial education programme called "Por Tua Conta", specifically designed for students who are attending vocational education and their teachers.

The Ordem dos Psicólogos Portugueses launched a social media campaign called "Click once and save for life", raising awareness about the importance of savings.

The Rede de Bibliotecas Escolares and the Direção-Geral da Educação (Ministry of Education) launched a campaign through its communication channels, to raise awareness about GMW2022 among the school community.

Additionally, more than 70 schools and 7,000 students across the country carried out a myriad of activities, including financial literacy competitions, online quizzes, debates based on the “Todos Contam Lesson Plans”, games and study trips.


2021 Portugal Global Money Week

The GMW2021 in Portugal was coordinated by the National Plan for Financial Education and involved more than 10,200 participants from more than 180 schools.

The GMW2021 celebrations kick-started with the national session, opened by the Chair of the Coordination Committee of the National Plan, the Deputy Head of the Directorate-General for Education (Portuguese Ministry of Education) and by the Chairman of the GMW Working Group of the OECD/INFE, who addressed the role of GMW in promoting financial education amongst young people. In this session, the financial supervisors and partners of the National Plan shared their activities programme for the Week.

On March 23rd, the financial supervisors promoted an online debate between secondary school students on the importance of saving to increase financial resilience. On March 24th, a similar online debate took place, where the students discussed the safe use of digital channels for making payments and other financial operations. More than 450 students from eight schools discussed these topics in the classroom, prior to the online debates, based on lesson plans developed by the financial supervisors. Two students from each school presented the outcome of these discussions during the online debates.

The Portuguese Banking Association (APB - Associação Portuguesa de Bancos) organised the national final of European Money Quiz, an initiative to test young people’s financial literacy, using the Kahoot! app. This year’s edition involved around 2,500 students from 40 schools. During GMW2021, APB also developed awareness raising initiatives for 500 people, together with municipal libraries and senior universities. These sessions addressed subjects such as managing the household budget, taking out credit, managing debt and the financial system in general.

The Portuguese Association of Specialised Credit Institutions (Associação de Instituições de Crédito Especializado - ASFAC) carried out two training sessions for 60 students from a vocational school, Instituto Profissional de Transportes da Escola Profissional de Loures, aimed at providing students with tools for improving money management.

Dr. António Cupertino de Miranda Foundation (FACM) announced the winners of the Financial Education Olympiads, enrolled in the 11th edition of the "No Poupar Está o Ganho" (Saving is Gaining) financial education project. This year the initiative was developed entirely online, through an e-learning platform, and involved around 3,858 students. Furthermore, FACM developed a set of online Financial Literacy Laboratories, within the scope of the project “Eu e a minha Reforma” (Me and my retirement), reaching around 160 adults from several municipalities in the North Region of the country.

The Portuguese Association for Consumer Protection (Associação Portuguesa para a Defesa do Consumidor - DECO) organised five online open classes for around 500 students from seven different schools, aimed at raising awareness about good practices for personal money management and the importance of creating saving habits. The main goal of the online classes was to raise awareness on these topics amongst students.

The Portuguese School Libraries Network (Rede de Bibliotecas Escolares - RBE) launched the GMW2021 campaign on social media to raise awareness about this event amongst schools, including teachers and students.

In addition to the initiatives developed by the financial supervisors and the partners of the National Plan, several schools across the country carried out debates, games, webinars, video contests, poster competitions and other activities.

Portuguese National Plan for Financial Education
To launch GMW2019, Banco de Portugal hosted students, who participated in a game titled “Balance the Budget”, which consisted of a quiz on financial topics to help a family balance their budget. After this session ended, the students and teachers participated in the game, “Vértice Financeiro” and watched a theater play, titled “A família Moedas”, which was created by the school during the Todos Contam Competition. Via its regional partners, the Banco de Portugal organised activities in different schools across the country. The Fundação Dr. António Cupertino de Miranda, a stakeholder of the Portuguese National Plan, organised the 3rd Financial Education Olympics. During the Week, the Portuguese Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority (ASF) organised an event for students from a vocational school. The participants, aged 15 to 18 years old, were invited to visit the ASF’s insurance library and participated in a debate activity on this year’s GMW theme “Learn.Save.Earn”. Additionally, the students played the “Are You Insured?” game, which aimed to test their knowledge on insurance issues. Additionally, the ASF organised an event for university students, who participated in awareness sessions regarding financial risks, the importance of insurance in risk reduction, the importance of saving, and the existing alternatives for investing those savings. During this session, the students could test their knowledge regarding these financial issues via a quiz. The Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM) and the Marinha Grande Nascente School Group, which encompasses 17 schools, carried out recreational and didactic activities for 130 students between the ages of 3 and 10. Children sang songs and recited rhymes, which they created themselves and were all on the subject of financial topics. Additionally, the older students performed a play, highlighting how different people deal with savings and the management of the family budget. Children also participated in a financial education project. Throughout the Week, schools across the country organised their own activities, which included classroom discussions, games, financial education app, conferences, and workshops on saving and budgeting.

Fundação Dr. António Cupertino de Miranda (FACM)
During GMW2019, Fundação Dr. António Cupertino de Miranda (FACM) organised the 3rd Edition of Financial Education Olympiads, which consists of a competition, where classes, enrolled in the "No Poupar Está o Ganho" financial education project, answered questions about various financial education themes. "No Poupar Está o Ganho" is a project which teaches students and teachers financial knowledge in order to change attitudes and behaviours. This initiative was organised in three stages: The first stage was online, where the Financial Olympiads were made available in the e-learning platform of the project. After this phase, the best class in each of the municipalities, was selected to participate in the face-to-face game. In 2019, the Financial Education Olympads was extended to the 3rd cycle. The "No Poupar Está o Ganho" project seeks to develop skills that enable young people to make informed and responsible financial decisions.

Novigesto
During each day of Global Money Week 2019, Novigesto provided seven online debates. The debates were on different subjects, including Financial Planning, Investing, Saving, Learning, Participating, Youth Finance, and Senior Finance.

Throughout GMW2019, Wlink organised workshops, high-level discussions, educational sessions, and lessons at schools. Throughout the Week, young people were able to engage themselves at the construction of piggy banks with recycled materials. Discussions about projects, budgets and achievements were also held during the Week.

ISEC Lisboa
For GMW2019, ISEC Lisboa aimed to develop financial management skills in a fun and playful way. A treasure hunt game was organised, where the children had to answer questions on the awareness and the importance of "money budgeting". All participants received a "Do-It-Yourself" piggy bank to save money for some personal project. In the end, all participants received a treasure chest full of chocolate coins.

Gondomar school - Agrupamento de Escolas N.º 1 de Gondomar
Throughout Global Money Week 2019, the school reached 150 children and youth. The School organised a visit to the Oporto branch office of the Banco de Portugal. Additionally, children participated in challenges, all on the subject of financial literacy. Furthermore, students participated in a play, and performed for their parents and guardians.

Bank of Portugal (Portuguese National Plan for Financial Education)
Multiple events were organised during Global Money Week. The Banco de Portugal hosted children from two different schools. The students participated in different games, where the goal was to distinguish between needs and wants and between variable and fixed income. Another game played was “Balance the Budget”, where students had to answer a quiz on financial topics to help a fictional family balance their budget. CMVM and Euronext organised an event, where students were received by the Vice-Chairman of the Board and participated in educative workshops on savings, financial investments, the importance of investing, and the role and function of financial markets. They also participated in the closing of the market. The Portuguese Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority (ASF) organised multiple activities for students from INETESE, a Portuguese vocational college. The students were invited to visit ASF’s current exhibition on the history of insurance and their financial education project. The visit also included a debate on the GMW theme ‘Money Matters Matter’. Finally, the participants played a game “Assure You’re Insured!” aimed at testing their knowledge of insurance issues. Throughout the Week, 24 schools across the country organised their own activities to celebrate GMW. These events included classroom discussions, games, conferences, and workshops on saving, budgeting, and other financial topics. The Fundação Dr António Cupertino de Miranda, a stakeholder of the Portuguese National Plan, organised the “2nd. Financial Education Olympics” in Oporto to celebrate GMW.

WLink
During Global Money Week, the WLink Group and their partners organised multiple seminars to address the issues of career choices. A simulation activity was conducted, where each student had a profession and an income assigned. With their income, students had to make choices about food, transportation, housing, and savings. Pre-school children were read a story, which highlighted the difference between needs and desires. Additionally, during the Week, children built their own piggy banks, using recyclable materials.

MOVE (Associação de Microcrédito e Empreendedorismo) Açores
During Global Money Week 2018, the MOVE Azores members learnt about savings and financial management, to use in their projects. Many activities were organised, including a market in Agua de Pau, a production of Ana's history in Lar Madre de Deus, and the construction of piggy banks and lessons on management and savings at the Centre for Youth Development and Inclusion of Rabo de Peixe. For two days, volunteers in Ponta Delgada brought the Global Money Week to the University of the Azores and the city. At the University, a conference entitled "Economic Growth and Social Responsibility" was hosted with the aim of associating the economy with responsible and sustainable growth. To end GMW2018, MOVE Azores went to the streets of Ponta Delgada to educate people on the value of essential goods and the importance of recognizing unnecessary purchases.

Portuguese Association for Consumer Protection (DECO)
The Portuguese Association for Consumer Protection-DECO: Financial Advice Office-GPF went to Colégio Internato dos Carvalhos to teach students the importance of a good money management. The children learnt how to make a monthly budget, the difference between needs and wants, the importance of saving, and basic notions on credits. At the end of the event, the audience asked questions on the state of debt of Portugal and how people should act in these types of situations.

Agrupamento de Escola n.º 1 de Gondomar
Multiple events were organised for the school children of Gondomar. The entire school was decorated with GMW posters. The students of the middle school created piggy banks for the kindergarten children and they created bookmarks for the elementary school children. The high school students offered a workshop on saving for the kindergarten children and a workshop on Financial Literacy for elementary school students.


2017 Portugal Global Money Week

On 27 March, ASF (Autoridade de Supervisão de Seguros e Fundos de Pensões), the Banco de Portugal and CMVM, the Portuguese Securities Market Commission, organised a series of four workshops for 104 secondary students of a college in Lisbon (Colégio Sagrado Coração de Maria), covering financial education topics such as: budget management and the importance of saving, the risks of using credit cards, understanding insurance, the financial market and its risks. On the same day, the Fundação Dr. António Cupertino de Miranda (Foundation), which is a stakeholder of the Portuguese National Plan, organised the “1st Financial Education Olympics” in Oporto. On 29 March, Banco de Portugal was visited by 84 children coming from three different schools. There were 33 children of the 1st stage of basic education from Jardim-Escola João de Deus of Leiria. They visited the Money Museum where they learnt about the history of money, and then participated in a game, “Arrumar para ganhar” (“organise to win”), in which the goal is to distinguish between needs and wants and between variable and fixed income. From Agrupamento de Escolas João de Deus of Faro and Agrupamento de Escolas de São Pedro do Sul, 51 secondary school students visited the bank. These two groups also visited the Money Museum, where they learnt about the origins of the banking business. In addition, these students participated in a game entitled “Equilibra o orçamento” (“balance the budget”), where students had to answer questions from a financial topics quiz to help Mr. Antonio’s family to balance their budget. Additionally, CMVM, the Portuguese Securities Market Commission, developed an awareness campaign based on the “Learn. Save. Earn.” theme, with 62 students from Agrupamento de Escolas de São Pedro do Sul, Centro Educativo dos Olivais and Agrupamento de Escolas D. Dinis de Odivelas. The CMVM also organised ludic and educative workshops on savings and on financial instruments. Moreover, children visted the Lisbon Stock Exchange, where they toured and played educative games reflecting the functioning of markets. Furthermore, ASF (Autoridade de Supervisão de Seguros e Fundos de Pensões) launched an awareness campaign amongst 200 students, ranging from 7th grade to high school, of Escola Profissional Vértice, in relation to the “Learn. Save. Earn.” theme, as well as subjects related to risk and the mechanisms used to prevent it. These students were also invited to see to the Risk Exhibition at the Ciência Viva museum. In this exhibition, the students learnt about the different types of risks, how to address the meaning and function of insurance, mitigation and risk transfer. The video can be watched here:

On 30 March, Banco de Portugal participated in the special event organised by CYFI in Amsterdam to mark GMW, under the patronage of H.M. Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. During the event, Banco de Portugal was one of the invited speakers at the round table discussion on digital finance and consumer protection implications for the youth.

Throughout the week, 20 schools across the country developed their own activities to mark GMW, involving the school community. These initiatives included classroom discussions, games, conferences and workshops about saving and budgeting and other financial topics. Via its regional network, Banco de Portugal participated in the activities of four of these schools in Oporto, Viseu, Coimbra and Faro.

2016 Portugal Global Money Week

On 15 March, the Bank of Portugal organised two training sessions focusing on needs, wants and budgeting with students from a primary school in Lisbon (Escola Básica no. 1 de Lisboa). During each training session, students engaged in activities, some from the first financial education schoolbook published in October 2015. These trainings happened as well on 16 March with students from another primary school (Escola Sampaio Garrido). Also on 15 March, the Portuguese Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority organised a competition called “Who wants to learn?” with two groups of students from insurance courses of SISEP, a vocational school in Lisbon. During the competition, students learnt about the importance of preventing risks and the purpose of insurance products.

On 17 March, the Banco de Portugal, the Portuguese Securities Market Commission and the Portuguese Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority, organised a series of 10 workshops, with 220 students from the third stage of basic education and secondary education, at a secondary school in Viseu (Escola Secundária de S. Pedro do Sul), which focused on five financial education subjects: budgeting, saving, insurance, credit and understanding the financial system. During the day, students discussed financial issues, watched videos and participated in educational games.

On 18 March, the Portuguese Securities Market Commission brought students from schools in Lisbon and Santarem (Escola Básica no. 2 e 3 de Santa Iria da Azóia and Centro de Bem Estar Social de Foros de Salvaterra) to visit NYSE Euronext Lisbon. The students learnt about the workings of the stock market and took part by “ringing the bell” at the closing of the trading session.

During GMW, several schools around the country developed various initiatives addressed to the school community. Amongst other financial issues, these included sessions and discussions in the classroom, in addition to conferences and workshops about savings and budgeting. One school, Escola Secundária de Estarreja in Aveiro, created a hat using reused materials, a project which alluded to consumption and consumerism. Another school in Lisbon, Escola Secundária José Saramago, organised a training session with students from the 3rd stage of basic education to explore the Portuguese National Plan’s website (www.todoscontam.pt).

Furthermore, Fundação Dr. António Cupertino de Miranda, a stakeholder from the Portuguese National Plan, built a magnetic puzzle, where students were invited to write a saving tip. All this information was permanently updated on the Portuguese National Plan’s website (www.todoscontam.pt).

2015 Portugal Global Money Week

An exciting agenda for Global Money Week 2015 was organised by several stakeholders of the Portuguese National Plan for Financial Education: the National Council of Financial Supervisors (the Banco de Portugal, the Portuguese Securities Market Commission and the Portuguese Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority – the leading stakeholders of the Plan), the Portuguese Ministry of Education and Science, the Portuguese Banking Association and the Portuguese Association of Specialised Credit Institutions.

Stakeholders of the Portuguese National Plan also encouraged schools across the country to involve their students in Global Money Week activities. In total, 32 schools and approximately 2500 students (aged between 4 and 18) joined the celebrations and organised activities to raise awareness on financial education topics. The Portuguese Banking Association organised a conference on financial education, under the European Money Week. Among other key speakers, the Conference had representatives from other stakeholders of the Portuguese National Plan, including the Banco de Portugal, and the Secretary of State for Basic and Secondary Education. Throughout the week, the Portuguese Banking Association also organised financial education quizzes with hundreds of students from 7 schools in the Lisbon region.

The Portuguese Securities Market Commission organised a visit to the NYSE Euronext Lisbon, with 30 students from Luís de Camões basic school (Lisbon). They learnt about the workings of the stock market and “rang the bell” at the closing of the trading session. The Annual General meeting of the National Council of Financial Supervisors with the stakeholders of the Plan took place, to assess the financial education initiatives of 2014 and to discuss the implementation of the 2015 programme, including initiatives targeted at schools.

The Coordinating Committee of the Portuguese National Plan visited the basic school Monte Flor (Lisbon) to deliver the honours award of the 3rd edition of the national financial education competition Todos Contam. During this visit, young children made a presentation about the entrepreneurial project that they are developing. The Portuguese Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority organised a competition “Who wants to learn?” with 80 students from 2 vocational schools of Lisbon, to teach them the importance of preventing risks and the workings of insurance products.

The Banco de Portugal, the Portuguese Securities Market Commission and the Portuguese Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority, with the support of the Portuguese Ministry of Education and Science, also organised a series of 10 workshops, with 300 secondary students at Tábua school (Coimbra), focused on key financial education subjects: budgeting, saving, insurance, credit and understanding the financial system. During the whole day, students discussed financial issues, watched videos and participated in educational games. On Aflatoun day, 17 March, the Association of Specialised Credit Institutions organised a Skype call between Santa Eulália school in Portugal and Tapera-Cactus School in Brazil, where students discussed their financial education projects and the importance of saving.

During the whole week, the Banco de Portugal, supported by its regional delegations and agencies, organised training sessions focused on savings, the importance of financial education, the knowledge of the Euro notes and/or the Eurosystem, with hundreds of students from 7 schools of different parts of the country: Azores, Braga, Coimbra and Viseu.

Several schools around the country developed initiatives addressed to the school community, including construction of piggy banks in the classroom, small group discussions, conferences and workshops about savings, budgeting and other financial issues. Each school was allocated an individual page on the National Plan’s website, to publish pictures and report the activities developed during Global Money Week. Estarreja secondary school (Aveiro) built a giant piggy bank with saving advices. During the week, students were invited to join this initiative and to commit to follow these advices, placing a “Like” in the piggy bank. In Oporto, Vértice vocational school organised a training session with secondary students, to explore the Portuguese National Plan’s website (the “Todos Contam”), where students discussed the importance of savings. Students from Touria basic school (Leiria) visited two local financial institutions, distributing leaflets in the streets about the importance of savings. Back in the classroom, students made a list of sayings about money and discussed financial education issues.

2014 Portugal Global Money Week

Under the Portuguese National Plan for Financial Education – an initiative of Banco de Portugal (Central Bank), the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM) and the Portuguese Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority (ISP) – 6 Portuguese schools participated in Global Money Week 2014.

50 school students from Lisbon visited the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM), where they learnt about the role of the CMVM and how the primary and secondary securities market work. They also visited Euronext Lisbon (Lisbon stock exchange) and took part in the ringing of the bell at the closing of the stock market.

School students visited the Banco de Portugal where they were treated to a guided-tour of Banco de Portugal’s Money Museum and learnt about the role and history of money. The students also held a videoconference with Child and Youth Finance International representatives, who explained Global Money Week’s main objectives and this year’s global theme: What do children and youth want for their future? This was the starting point for a discussion about the importance of savings, in order to achieve future goals. During the discussion, students also learnt about the role of the Eurosystem in safeguarding price stability and the value of money and savings.

A visit to the Portuguese Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority (ISP) was also organised for students, where they took part in a game and a Q&A session about savings and insurance. The students then had the opportunity to share the projects that they have been developing in the area of financial education.

 Schools from the Oporto region participated in the Global Money Week, under the Portuguese National Plan for Financial Education. Various activities were organised at one of the schools involving almost 400 students from different school levels. The students participated in educational games, watched movies on financial education and participated in study visits to the Paper Money Museum (of António Cupertino de Miranda foundation). A group of students had a debate on the importance of financial education and held a videoconference with students from a school in Colombia about this topic. While another group of students from a different school prepared a presentation for raising awareness on the importance of financial education, particularly on issues related to savings and budget management.

A school in the north of Portugal, Colegio Santa Eulalia in Sanguedo, participated in Skype calls to celebrate Aflatoun Day. A journalist that publishes materials related to Portuguese Financial Literacy was also there to write about what the young people would discuss during the call. During the call both schools shared about their enterprises. The Armenian and Portuguese students loved chatting to each other about their respective entrepreneurial activities. The Armenian students showed off their self-made creative mobile phone accessories and shared that they raised approximately 300 euros by selling them. They explained that the money will be used for school excursions. The Portuguese students talked about their school garden which they harvest for fresh vegetables which they sell to the community (parents, teachers and other children).

“During the event children had the opportunity to interact with young students from other schools, through video conference and learn about their financial education initiatives. An eight-year-old boy enthusiastically explained that his class was involved in a collective sale of vegetables and fruits to raise money for a party in school!” Shared the organisers.

Global Money Portugal was celebrated through a visit from 50 children enrolled in primary and secondary school to Banco de Portugal. The visit started with a guided tour to the Money Museum of Banco de Portugal.

The children had the opportunity to take part in video conferences with two schools that are involved in financial education projects. During these video conferences, they learnt about these projects and discussed financial issues. Another video conference was organised with the head of the Financial Education Unit at the Central Bank of Brazil, Mr. Joao Evangelista Filho, from whom children learnt about financial education projects being carried out in Brazil. Moreover, the children had a guided tour through the website of CYFI, including simulations with the Global Savings Calculator.

The activities also included a short presentation of the website of the Portuguese National Plan for Financial Education, with emphasis to the contents dedicated to the young people, and a video on money management was shown. After watching the video, the children discussed the importance of budgeting and saving. They also watched a film on the Financial Education Day, which was organised by the National Plan for Financial Education on 31st October 2012, the World’s Savings Day.

At the end, the children received a participation certificate and they took a group photo.
