In Mauritius, "Managing Your Money Smartly" was a two-hour interactive talk focused on three core principles of money management: Earn, Save and Spend. The session emphasised the prioritisation of expenses, being a SMART consumer, and budgeting effectively. Students learnt practical tips on how to manage their income, the importance of saving for future needs, and making wise spending choices.
One of the highlights of the GMW activities was the engagement sessions of students with the Governor of the Central Bank of Mauritius. At the end of each workshop, students and young people were able to meet and discuss with the Governor. This approach enriches the educational experience, making financial literacy more accessible, more relevant and inspiring for the younger generation.
They gain direct exposure to the experiences shared by the Governor; the interaction bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application and engaging with a prominent figure can inspire students conveying the tangible impact of careers in finance. The "JA Notre Quartier" project targeted 7th and 8th-grade students, introducing them to the economic and social dynamics of their neighbourhood. The project aimed to help students understand the opportunities and responsibilities associated with their community. The programme consisted of five interactive activities, each lasting 60 minutes, facilitated by volunteers from Junior Achievement Mascareignes, teachers, and the students themselves. Students explored various professions crucial to the functioning of a neighbourhood, discussing the roles and responsibilities of different jobs.
"JA Our Families" introduced first-grade students to basic social studies concepts related to families, neighbourhoods, money, and needs versus wants. The programme included five 30-minute sessions, taught by volunteers and supported by a kit-based curriculum. Through hands-on activities, students explored entrepreneurship and how businesses provide goods, services, and jobs for families. Additional extended learning activities and digital resources were available to enhance the learning experience.
Students from École Familiale de l'Ouest and Étoile de Mer had the opportunity to visit the Bank of Mauritius. During the visit, they explored the currency museum, gaining valuable insights into the history of money, economic principles, finance, and cultural evolution. This visit provided a practical perspective on how financial institutions operate and the role of money in society.
Global Money Week successfully engaged students in various educational activities that enhanced their understanding of money management, the economic structure of their communities, and the broader financial system. Through interactive talks, projects, and field trips, students gained essential financial literacy skills that will help them make informed decisions about earning, saving, and spending money in the future.
