Global Money Week celebrations in Puerto Rico were led by Nuestra Escuela. Numerous events were organised in Caguas, Loíza, and Vieques which focused on the themes of entrepreneurship, micro enterprises, the function of a store, how to use your money wisely and financial institutions functions and roles. Students learnt about developing microenterprises using solid waste materials. A small business owner in Vieques shared her story with children and youth. Students enjoyed the opportunity to learn about how a bank functions and the types of services provided by banks to businesses and individuals. A drawing contest was held with the theme “This is what I want my savings for”. Manual Cidre and other leading entrepreneurs shared their business stories motivating many of the young participants. Many of the stories shared the commonality of starting young, helping with the family business, later developing into enterprise businesses. Youth were inspired by the possibility of creating brighter futures for themselves and their families.

Students from Puerto Rico participated in a Global Money Week Youth Talk which was organised with students from Ecuador. They shared the different experiences as entrepreneurs in the agriculture sector and learnt of the entrepreneurial aspirations of their Ecuadorian peers.

The activities/themes were selected by the students. Nuestra Escuela’s personnel then assisted in the coordination of the activities that where held outside of the school premises. Students were able to interact with bank personnel, entrepreneurs and discuss and share their thoughts and ideas on the subjects. It has been a great learning and active experience for all.

The organisation Nuestra Escuela conducted an exciting GMW between the 10-17 March 2014. Volunteers from the organisation held a workshop for young Puerto Ricans to about creating youth cooperatives so that they can work with their peers to advocate for financial education and inclusion. During the workshop participants were also given tips on how to be entrepreneurial in a ‘bad’ economy.

Children and youth were invited to visit banks for a tour as well as mini-lectures. The younger children were told how the banking system works and how money is designed and minted, while the older youth learnt how to use a checkbook, a credit card and what process they will have to go through in order to buy a home.

In the city of San Juan, children were taught efficient money management skills through fun activities and playing games based on buying and selling of articles. A social network campaign was designed to teach young people about how public funds are used, what the annual national budget is and how it is allocated in 2014. A video-conference was also organised between Puerto Rican and Nicaraguan pupils to chat about ‘the future of children.”
