GMW 2024 in Japan was run for an extended period, from 1-31 March, in order to allow more flexibility in organising and holding events. This was the fourth year that GMW has been held widely in Japan. The number of organisations participating in the GMW increased significantly from 77 last year to 121, thanks to growing interest in financial education in Japan and increased awareness of the GMW. The number of young people and adults participating in the events also increased significantly from 29,000 in 2023 to 39,000.
One characteristic of GMW2024 was that the events and classes were not limited to large cities, but were held in regional cities, showing the regional spread of the event. The number of participants from public libraries in rural areas also increased significantly and many regional financial institutions have shown interest and willingness to participate in the GMW. Various events were also held for people who have not had much exposure to financial education in the past, such as special-needs schools and foreign students living in Japan. GMW continues to be a great opportunity for people to reaffirm the importance of financial education in Japan and the need to develop financial education for children and young people throughout the country.
GMW participants held seminars, lessons, events in their offices, and actively dispatched lecturers to schools to provide lessons on money. Some 16 organisations provided lessons at a total of 40 schools, including elementary, junior high, and high schools, and special-needs schools. The seminars/lessons were designed in various ways to allow children to learn about money while having fun, including the use of card games, apps, and simulators to simulate household budget management and investment. The latest anti-counterfeiting measures and universal design introduced in the new banknotes to be issued this summer were also discussed.

GMW2023 in Japan was run for an extended period, from 11 to 31 March in order to allow more flexibility in organising and holding events, as March is the end of the school year and the end of financial year for many corporates. Due to the extended duration of the GMW and the fact that the 3-year-long impact of Covid-19 is beginning to normalise, many events were organised with more variety than last year. As this was the third full-fledged GMW in Japan, the goals of the GMW become more widespread among participating organisations, various ideas were put forward for the events. The number of participating organisations was 77, up from 38 last year, and the number of children and young people who took part was at least 15,000, a significant increase from 4,806 last year. Participating organisations actively disseminated information through social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, as well as through a special GMW webpage, which had a total of 15 million hits. The three megabanks used a common hashtag to widely disseminate information about the purpose of the GMW and their support for the GMW2023 slogan, "Plan your money, plant your future! ".
Face-to-face events increased due to the reduced impact of Covid-19. Visits to the facilities of public institutions such as the Bank of Japan, Tokyo Stock Exchange, the Mint and the Printing Bureau resumed and were all well attended. Local financial institutions held classes on money and economics for primary, middle and high school students. Events to help children learn basic money skills were also organised, such as the Flea Market, only open to children was held in shopping malls across the country. A number of online seminars continued to be held on a wide range of topics for children, parents, and teachers. The use of the Metaverse was also seen in the seminars. Courses on the use of fintech, such as household accounting and flea market apps, were also organised.
From an inclusive reach perspective, public libraries where children and young people from different backgrounds gather were invited to participate in GMW2023. Some 31 public libraries across the country supported the GMW and organised exhibitions of books on money. Many of them were of local towns and villages. Many libraries that were not able to participate in GMW2023 voiced their support for the spread of financial education by organising events outside the period. GMW2023 in Japan was a great success, with many events held and many children as well as teachers and parents participating, spreading the spirit of GMW to a wide range of ages across the country.

In Japan, 38 institutions and more than 90,000 people including children and youth participated in Global Money Week 2022. Through social networking sites and media access, the campaign drew an interest of more than 18 million people. It is significantly more than in the previous year. It is due to growing awareness of the importance of financial education as well as the increased visibility of the GMW due to the OECD's coordinating the campaign.
Especially, the implementation of the amended Civil Code to lower the age of adulthood from 20 to 18 in April 2022, GMW2022 attracted more attention before the enforcement of a new law. During the week, events on the theme of lowering the age of adulthood were held for high school students who became adults during their school years. On-site classes and online seminars were held and many web contents were published and disseminated on social networking sites.
Many GMW events in Japan were held for everyone from elementary school to university students. It was a good opportunity to reaffirm the importance of financial literacy, including life planning, asset building, cashless payments, and more.
GMW2022 was a good opportunity to remind not only young people but also teachers and parents of the importance of improving financial literacy. During the campaign, many youth voiced that they felt as if a new world had opened up to them. In addition, many of the participating organisations mentioned that participating in GMW, an international awareness campaign, served as a wake-up call to reaffirm the importance of financial literacy within the industry.

During GMW, Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) welcomed eight groups of students from five high schools and three junior high schools, from different parts of Japan. During the visits, students attended lectures from TSE staff about the mechanism of stock companies, the roles of stock exchanges, and the meaning of investment. The students also enjoyed guided tours of the TSE facilities. The tours gave them the chance to observe how TSE staff monitor the stock market on a real-time basis in the Market Center, see from afar the media booths where news presenters record programs to beam across the world, and view the listing bell from the balcony housing, which is rang by corporate executives in a listing ceremony.
